The tempering process involves heating the glass to a very high temperature (about 600°C) and then rapidly cooling it, creating external and internal layers of stress that enhance its strength. In the event of an impact, the compressive stress on the surface makes it difficult for cracks to form and spread. Conversely, the internal tensile stress absorbs and dissipates the force within the glass, reducing the risk of damage. Unlike ordinary glass, tempered glass has a more cohesive internal structure, increasing its durability. Moreover, if tempered glass breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces instead of sharp, jagged shards.
